Cycling from San Pedro to Ronda — Everything You Need to Know

Route Guides 15. Februar 2026

The ride from San Pedro de Alcántara to Ronda is one of the most iconic cycling routes in southern Spain. It climbs from sea level to over 700 metres, passes through some of the most beautiful countryside in Andalusia, and finishes at one of the most dramatic towns in all of Spain. Here's everything you need to know before you go.

The Route at a Glance

  • Distance: Approx 95km (one way) — most people do it as a loop
  • Total Climbing: Around 1,400m
  • Difficulty: Hard — suitable for cyclists with a base level of fitness
  • Best Season: October to May
  • Start Point: San Pedro de Alcántara (our shop is a perfect base)

The Climb

The main climb starts once you leave the coast road behind. From Cancelada, the road winds steadily upward through cork oak forests and past the occasional farmhouse. There's nothing brutal — no sudden walls — just a consistent gradient that builds over 30 kilometres. Save some energy for the last push into Ronda.

Ronda: Worth Every Metre of Climbing

When you roll into Ronda, the effort immediately feels worth it. The town sits on a clifftop with a 100-metre drop to the valley floor — the views are extraordinary. Lock your bike at the Puente Nuevo, walk to the viewing point and take it all in. Then eat everything on the menu at the nearest restaurant.

The Descent

The descent back to the coast is genuinely brilliant — long, smooth and fast. Keep your speed in check on the corners and enjoy the views as the sea comes back into sight. Most cyclists are grinning all the way to the bottom.

Tips for the Day

  • Start early — ideally before 8am in summer to beat the heat on the climb
  • Carry at least 2 bottles of water. There are villages on route but don't rely on them
  • A light rain jacket is worth packing — the mountains make their own weather
  • Take the A-397 from San Pedro — it's the classic road, quiet and well-surfaced
  • Book a table in Ronda before you go. You'll be hungry and you'll deserve it
